The "Alkaline" Concert Missed a Special Musical Ingredient

Port of Spain, Trinidad

Trinidad was anticipating one of Jamaica's hottest rising dancehall superstar "Alkaline" and on Saturday, July 2, 2016, he graced the stage in the Queens Park Savannah, Port of Spain. The night began with local artistes' such as Orlando Octave, S. Carter, Peter Ram, Skinny Fabulous just to name a few. CaribbeanNation took the opportunity to mix and mingle backstage in order to cover the event in question. Upon arriving, we put ourselves in place to get a close-up look at the cast lineup and their performances during the course of the evening. Excited party patrons were entertained by DJs and music during a particular  time period. Soon the local artistes' took full control of the stage but did not seem to maintain the energy and hype that the crowd was looking for. Some artistes' deliveries were weak and a bit off, another appeared to be lost for words, with one in particular who did not have the right formula to move the crowd. Based on patrons being patient for the headliner artiste gave them encouragement to just play along. For a moment it seemed like "Kiskadee Caravan" and some people became uninterested. Honestly speaking the artistes' who were selected to open the show could have been a bit more entertaining seeing that they were on their own home turf.

In hindsight, the DJs did a much better job in keeping the crowd musically inclined and happy with the choice of music that blazed up the savannah. Then after half-time, Rapper, O.T. Genasis bolted out on stage with some of his songs. The crowd excitingly received him and sang along with "Genasis" now and then. Once he dropped his hit song "Cut It" spectators went wild and sang even more. His performance was okay, but he did not connect in-depth with his fans. He could have placed more emphasis on controlling the stage platform like he owned it. Then the moment that everyone was waiting for arrived and the entire Queens Park Savannah went completely insane. Under tight security "Alkaline" was escorted onto the stage with a few of his entourage. It was like a circus from where we stood and observed the whole mayhem. Once he began to drop his hits young women from the general section started to scale and jumped the fence that led to the stage area. Suddenly VIP was no longer of such taste due to the people who blatantly imposed themselves in the private section.

"Alkaline's" performance was not what we expected due to him being such a huge dancehall artiste. For the most part, his DJ played the rhythms while he sang a few lines at a 30 seconds pace. Despite his lack of real delivery, the crowd could not have cared less, because it was "Alkaline". In their minds, he mashed up the place with his vendetta as he likes to mention. However, he interacted with his fans a lot by climbing on top of the speaker box, at one point he threw his white face towel into the crowd and he also pleaded with them to behave nicely, so the police would not intervene. Chicks were hanging from the edge of the fencing like wild monkies and the police force had to be stern with them to get down. Screams and shouts could be heard from miles by young girls who were mesmerized by "Alkaline". When it was all said and done and the dust was cleared all of "Alkaline's" hardcore fans were pleased with what he had to offer. In conclusion, the promoters made a great attempt with the concert and we give them that much recognition. The security was on point, the bar was fully loaded and the parking was not really a hassle for us. Our only concern is that they should have recruited better local artistes' who truly wanted to perform wholeheartedly.
